What are Indigenous Agricultural Practices (IAP's)?
Indigenous Agricultural Practices are those methodologies and techniques used in the application of indigenous practical knowledge on agriculture, botany, and animal husbandry practices. In the Caribbean Region, rural farmers, especially the older ones, form a highly valuable information source for indigenous knowledge on agriculture, botany and animal husbandry practices. This agricultural heritage plays an important role in community life and folklore, but is often poorly or not at all documented and passed on only through speech and practical experience. This prevents the sharing of information to the wider community or region, and also increases the risk that knowledge, which in many cases was accumulated and perfected during the last centuries, will be lost in the near future.

What is being done to protect the precious
Indigenous Agricultural Knowledge?

ECO Project Ltd. has recently embarked on a study of the “Indigenous Agricultural Practices in Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.” to prevent the precious knowledge that was accumulated over several hundred years from vanishing. Farmers from various fields of knowledge and different communities will be interviewed and the collected information will help to create a so far unique booklet as well as a sub-website and a video. This will help to make the techniques available to all stakeholders and future generations. Applications for funding of this project have been made to the Inter American Development Bank, the Embassy of the Netherlands (Trinidad and Tobago) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations who already expressed their genuine interest to support the project.
